London will humble you. You'll think you've got it figured out after day two and then discover on day three that you've barely scratched the surface of one neighborhood in one borough of a city that contains multitudes.
It is vast, contradictory, relentlessly interesting, and genuinely unlike anywhere else on earth. It's also expensive. We're not going to pretend otherwise. But done right, London rewards every penny.
When to Go
May through September. London in summer is genuinely glorious — the parks fill up, the outdoor spaces come alive, and the city operates at full capacity in the best possible way. June and July hit the sweet spot before the school holiday surge.
November through January if grey skies and short days aren't your thing. Beautiful in a melancholy way but not the London of postcards.
Foolish Traveler Tip
London's museums are free. All the major ones — the British Museum, the National Gallery, the V&A, the Natural History Museum. Free. No catch. This changes the entire economics of a London trip if you plan around it.
Getting Around London
The Tube is your best friend and occasional enemy. Buy an Oyster card or use a contactless bank card — tapping in and out is cheaper than buying individual tickets and works on the Underground, buses, and the Overground.
What Nobody Tells You
Walking between stops is often faster than the Tube in central London. Google Maps will tell you it's a 4-minute tube journey. It will not tell you that includes 12 minutes of escalators and platform waiting. Walk when the distance is under 20 minutes. You'll see more and arrive faster.
Getting There
Heathrow (LHR)
The Elizabeth Line connects it to central London in about 35 minutes for a reasonable fare.
Gatwick & Stansted
Served by train and coach. The Gatwick Express is fast and pricey. The regular Thameslink train is slower and half the cost.
Where to Stay in London
For Classic London
Covent Garden, Soho & Fitzrovia
Walking distance to the West End, great restaurants, and the feeling that you're in the London you came to see. Expensive.
For Cool London
Shoreditch & Hackney
Where the city's creative energy lives. Excellent food, interesting bars, independent everything. Well connected to the center. More affordable than Zone 1.
For Value with Character
Brixton
Vibrant, diverse, and genuinely excellent for food and nightlife. The Victoria line gets you into central London in 15 minutes. Half the price of Zone 1 accommodation.
Foolish Traveler Tip
London hotel prices are aggressive. Consider a well-reviewed flat rental for anything longer than three nights — you get a kitchen, more space, and a residential experience that teaches you more about the city than any hotel could.
What to Eat in London
London's food scene has undergone a complete transformation in the last two decades and is now genuinely world-class. The old reputation for bad British food is hilariously outdated.
Borough Market
Go for the food, not the Instagram content. The cheese, charcuterie, fresh bread, and street food stalls are exceptional. Thursday through Saturday are the full market days.
A Proper Sunday Roast
Find a good pub, order the roast, and settle in for the afternoon. Beef, pork, or lamb with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, and vegetables. One of Britain's genuine contributions to civilization.
Brick Lane for Curry
London's curry scene is world-class and dramatically underpriced compared to everything else. The surrounding area in Whitechapel has genuinely excellent Bangladeshi restaurants.
The Pub Lunch
A good pub with a proper kitchen is one of London's great pleasures. Fish and chips, a pie, a pint of something on cask. Affordable, unpretentious, and very good when you find the right place.
The Experiences Worth Having
The British Museum
Free EntryFree, extraordinary, and simultaneously the best argument for and against British imperialism. The Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, the Sutton Hoo helmet. Go with time and curiosity.
Tower of London
Book AheadExpensive but worth it once. The Crown Jewels are legitimately spectacular and the history within those walls covers about 1,000 years of remarkably violent British history.
Tate Modern
Free EntryFree entry to the permanent collection, housed in a converted power station on the Thames. One of the great modern art museums anywhere in the world. The building alone justifies the visit.
Thames Walking Tour
FreeThe riverbank from Tower Bridge to Tate Modern on the South Bank is one of London's great free walks. Borough Market, Shakespeare's Globe, Tate Modern, Millennium Bridge. Two hours, free, beautiful.
West End Theatre
Book AheadLondon's theatre scene rivals Broadway and frequently surpasses it. Day seats and standing tickets exist for most shows and are dramatically cheaper than face value. Go see something.
London's top experiences sell out fast
Tower of London, Harry Potter studios, changing of the guard tours — lock them in early.
London After Dark
London's nightlife is enormous, diverse, and operates on a relatively civilized timeline compared to Barcelona or Rome. Last orders at most pubs are 11pm — a British institution that either charms or infuriates depending on your perspective.
Soho
Bars and late-night energy. The heart of London nightlife.
Shoreditch
Club nights and live music. The creative east end.
Fabric & Ministry
Serious club music. London's club scene punches hard when you find the right night.
Foolish Traveler Tip
The Night Tube runs on Friday and Saturday nights on several lines. No need to book a cab at 2am — you can stay out and get home affordably. Plan your nights around which lines run through midnight.
Practical London
Language
English, obviously. Also approximately 300 other languages depending on the neighborhood. London is one of the most diverse cities on earth.
Money
Budget £100–150 per day for mid-range travel. A pint of beer in central London costs £6–8. A meal at a decent restaurant runs £25–40 per person with drinks.
Safety
London is a safe city with normal urban considerations. The Tube is safe. The streets are generally safe. Use common sense around tourist hotspots and transport hubs.
Weather
Famously unpredictable. Pack layers and a compact umbrella regardless of what the forecast says. The forecast is always wrong.
