A great solo trip isn't a smaller version of a couple's trip — it's its own thing. Cities where you feel safe walking back to the hotel at 10pm. Hostels and hotels with social bars. Activities that put you next to other travelers without forcing it. This 12-day trip through Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen is built around those criteria.

Who this is forSolo female travelers, first-time or experienced. Women on a sabbatical or post-relationship reset trip. Anyone who wants the freedom of a solo trip without the loneliness.

Why this trip works

When to go

May through September. Copenhagen is best in summer (long daylight, café terraces). Lisbon is good year-round but breezier in winter. Avoid Amsterdam in deep winter (short days kill the canal-side magic).

What it costs

Solo means hotel rooms cost the same per night as couples but you're paying alone. Plan on $3,000–$4,000 for 12 days at a comfortable level. Hostels with private rooms cut this to $1,800. Eat one nice dinner every other day, lunch at markets, breakfast at the hotel.

The Sample Itinerary

Lisbon, Amsterdam & Copenhagen — Solo, 12 Days

Four nights in each city. All three are safe, social, walkable, and rewarding for solo female travelers.

Day 1 · Lisbon

Arrive — Alfama, fado, pastel

Land, taxi or aerobus to Alfama hostel or boutique hotel. Walk the neighborhood. Pastel de nata break. Tram 28 to the river. Light dinner.

Insider tip: Boutique hotels with bars are the best move for solo travel — you have a place to read a book and chat with the bartender. Hotel Riverside in Alfama is a favorite.

Stay: Alfama (atmospheric, very safe at night, full of solo travelers)

Day 2 · Lisbon

Free walking tour + Time Out Market

Free walking tour from Praça do Comércio (great way to meet people on day one). Lunch at Time Out Market. Afternoon at the miradouros. Evening: Fado dinner.

Insider tip: Time Out Market is a giant food hall — solo-dinner-friendly. You sit at communal tables and meet people without trying.

Stay: Alfama

Day 3 · Lisbon

Belém + Sintra option

Morning at Belém — Jerónimos, Belém Tower, original pastéis. Or full day to Sintra. Either way, easy evening at a wine bar near Largo do Carmo.

Insider tip: Solo wine bars in Lisbon: By the Wine in Chiado (industry-favorite), Wine Bar do Castelo (rooftop near the castle).

Stay: Alfama

Day 4 · Lisbon

Slow day + tram 28 + sunset

Late breakfast. Spa morning if your hotel has one. Tram 28 end-to-end with stops. Sunset at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. Last Lisbon dinner — somewhere you bookmarked.

Insider tip: Solo travelers often skip "the famous restaurant." Don't. Book a counter seat (every great restaurant has one) and let the server feed you.

Stay: Alfama

Day 5 · Amsterdam

Fly north — canals + bikes

Morning flight to AMS. Train to Centraal (15 min). Drop bags in the Jordaan. Rent a bike. Bike the canals at sunset. Easy dinner.

Insider tip: A boutique hotel bar in Amsterdam (Hoxton lobby is unbeatable for solo travelers) is the easiest way to chat with strangers without it being a meet-up.

Stay: Jordaan — the most charming, safe, and walkable district. Hotel options: The Hoxton, Pulitzer, Mr Jordaan

Day 6 · Amsterdam

Museums + cooking class

Rijksmuseum first thing. Lunch at Foodhallen. Afternoon Indonesian cooking class — Amsterdam's best meet-other-travelers activity.

Stay: Jordaan

Day 7 · Amsterdam

Anne Frank + canal walk

Anne Frank House first thing (book 6 weeks ahead). Late lunch. Long canal walk with a book and a coffee. Cocktail bar evening.

Insider tip: Drink Tales of Tales of Cocktails or Pulitzer's Bar for solo-friendly cocktail bars. Sit at the bar.

Stay: Jordaan

Day 8 · Amsterdam

Day trip — Haarlem or Utrecht

Day trip option: Haarlem (15 min by train, prettier than Amsterdam) or Utrecht (25 min, more local). Or slow day reading in Vondelpark. Last Amsterdam dinner.

Insider tip: Haarlem on Saturday has an outdoor market in the main square. Half the locals shop there.

Stay: Jordaan

Day 9 · Copenhagen

Fly to Denmark — Nyhavn evening

Morning flight Amsterdam to Copenhagen (1h 20m). Train to city center (15 min). Drop bags. Walk Nyhavn at sunset. Smørrebrød dinner.

Insider tip: Copenhagen is small. Everything is walkable. A bike rental for €15 a day is the locals' move.

Stay: Indre By (central, walkable to everything) or Vesterbro (cooler, slightly cheaper)

Day 10 · Copenhagen

Tivoli + Nørrebro food walk

Morning at the Round Tower for views. Lunch at Torvehallerne food market. Afternoon at Tivoli Gardens. Dinner in Nørrebro — Copenhagen's coolest neighborhood.

Insider tip: Tivoli is the world's oldest amusement park and the place hygge was invented. Worth one evening even if you're skeptical.

Stay: Indre By

Day 11 · Copenhagen

Louisiana day trip + last night

Half-day to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (40 min train north, one of the great art museums on earth, in a sculpture garden over the sea). Back for sunset cocktails.

Hidden gem

Christianshavn canal walk

Like Amsterdam without the tourists. Walk the canal, get a coffee, sit on a houseboat's edge.

Insider tip: Pack a book and a thermos for the train. The Louisiana train ride is the kind of moving meditation solo trips are made of.

Stay: Indre By

Day 12 · Copenhagen

Fly home

Slow last breakfast. Train to CPH airport (15 min). Fly home.

Insider tip: CPH is one of the best airports in Europe. 2 hours before international is plenty.

Stay: Checkout

The Foolish Verdict

The cities you pick for a solo trip matter more than the activities you do. Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen are three of the easiest places in the world to travel alone — safe at night, easy to meet people, beautiful enough to walk for hours and never get bored. The trip is a reset. Take it.
