Every great European city has two versions. The version that appears in every guidebook, on every highlights reel. And the version that exists just beyond that — the neighborhood, the restaurant, the viewpoint that most visitors walk past because they're following the same list everyone else is following.

Here's what's hiding in plain sight in the cities you think you already know.

Hidden gems in Paris
1

The Covered Passages

Nineteen 19th-century glass-roofed shopping arcades survive in central Paris, most of them entirely ignored by tourists rushing between monuments. Galerie Vivienne, Passage des Panoramas, Passage Jouffroy — step into any of them and you step into a Paris that feels genuinely unchanged since Haussmann.

Free, beautiful, and almost entirely tourist-free.

2

Belleville & Ménilmontant

The 20th arrondissement is where Édith Piaf was born, where street art covers entire building facades, where the city's most diverse and interesting food scene currently lives, and where almost no tourist ever goes.

The Parc de Belleville has one of the best views over Paris available. Nobody is taking the same photo as you.

3

The Palais Royal Gardens

A short walk from the Louvre, entirely invisible from the street, and one of the most beautiful public spaces in Paris. The arcaded garden, the Buren columns, the restaurants under the arcades — a complete Paris experience in a space that most visitors to the nearby Louvre never find.

Free to enter. Most Louvre visitors walk straight past the entrance.
